This holiday season, the walls of Susan Powell Fine Art will be decked with a whopping 70 oils and pastels by 25 award-winning artists for its Annual Holiday Show. “This is one of our most popular shows, and offers exciting choices for everyone,” says gallery owner Susan Powell. Subjects featured in the exhibition include still lifes, landscapes, seascapes, florals, Trompe l’Oeil works and more. Participating artists include Kathy Anderson, Del-Bourree Bach, Dan Brown, Deborah Chabrian, Anne McGrory, Leonard Mizerek, Larry Preston, Cindy Procious, Jeanne Rosier Smith, Kyle Stuckey and George Van Hook—to name a few.

Among the more festive works featured is Chabrian’s Shiny Reindeer, which, as the name suggests, shows a shiny reindeer ornament posed in front of a box of classic round ornaments. “In my painting Shiny Reindeer, I decided to paint the box of vintage Christmas ornaments in their whimsical packaging, because it felt like it was a visual time capsule of the holiday spirit,” says the watercolor artist. “I added more ornaments and the silver reindeer to further this narrative thread and increase the amount of reflective surfaces. I played with the light to enhance the mood, using both window [light] and artificial light in a darkened room. My intent was to create a small world of warm and cool reflections that evoked the essence of the season.”
Kathy Anderson, White Hollyhocks, oil on canvas, 20 x 12"
Dan Brown, Lady Rodney and the Lacemaker, oil on panel, 13 x 12"Switching up the scenery is Smith’s Sea Thunder, which she painted in Gloucester, Massachusetts, during a residency program with the Copley Society of Art in Boston. “As a seascape painter, I was there to observe the ocean at all times of day, at every tide and in all its moods,” she says. “Lucky for me, Hurricane Dorian barreled up the coast and put on a spectacular show. Sea Thunder captures the thrilling power of crashing twilight waves against a post-storm, clearing sky.”

Anderson will be bringing one of her signature floral scenes to the Holiday Show. “White Hollyhocks was painted from life one late afternoon in a good friend’s garden,” she says of the painting. “As with most of my garden pieces, it’s important for me to get a strong block-in to capture the light source and color nuances. This, plus good photo reference and bringing some cut flowers home, enables me to finish the painting in the studio.”
The Annual Holiday Show will be on view from December 1 through January 31, 2020.
