Molly Schmid, Oranges, oil on canvas, 9 x 12"“Can’t believe that we opened back in 1984—no computers then,” says Diane. “We are so proud that we are in our 35th year, 28 years in our current location in beautiful Santa Barbara. Art is our life, and it is a joy to represent such fine traditional contemporary talent.”
Among the artists whose work can be seen in the upcoming exhibition are Peter Adams, Sung Eun Kim, Brent Jensen, John Cosby, Pauline Roche, Tom Hughes, Michael Fitzpatrick, Jove Wang, Mian Situ, George Bodine, Matt Smith, Ovanes Berberian, Albin Veselka, Robert Lemler, Stan Moeller, Ray Hunter, Jean LeGassick, Gerard Boersma and more.
Derek Harrison, Ascension, oil, 32 x 24"
Native New Englander Molly Schmid works in portraiture, still life, landscapes and wildlife, as well as abstract concepts. For her still lifes, the artist says she traditionally works from a real-life reference, but one of her paintings, Oranges, in the Waterhouse Gallery show developed entirely from her imagination. “Probably 90 percent of it is done strictly with a palette knife,” says Schmid, who was playing around and experimenting with the tool. “I limit my palette and limit myself to just my knife and do most of the mixing on the canvas itself, so all the blending and edgework happens right there on the canvas. It definitely was a conceptual piece and it eventually became these oranges. So this is a really unusual painting; it’s one of my favorites I’ve done in a long time because it’s just so different.” Schmid explains that orange is one of those colors she doesn’t often gravitate toward, but an abundance of cadmium orange and cadmium deep yellow gifted to her by her father ultimately pushed her to break out of her comfort zone. She adds that she enjoys the texture and thick, impasto sections within the painting, which aren’t typical of her other works.
Jim McVicker, Storm Sky Eureka Harbor, oil, 16 x 12"Other works included in the show are a maritime scene by Jim McVicker, Storm Sky Eureka Harbor; an oil of a woman in a red dress ascending a spiraling staircase by Derek Harrison; and a figurative work by Christina Ramos, depicting a woman in sunglasses with pink hair and a fluffy pink jacket, looking confidently in the direction of the viewer, titled Badass.
Christina Ramos, Badass, acrylic on canvas, 30 x 24"Artist demonstrations will take place the first day from 1 to 4 p.m., and a reception will be held from 4 to 7 p.m.
