Finding beauty within the darkness is a theme that runs throughout Gail Potocki’s symbolist paintings. Using a strong female figure as the protagonist, her “subjects are led into temptation and made to pay for the mistakes of all mankind; absorbing the world’s transgressions, folding punishment into flesh,” explains Galerie Fledermaus, which represents the artist. Giver and Taker is a prime example of these dichotomies. The painting is included in Potocki’s hardcover book The Union of Hope and Sadness. —
