LA Light

New works by Los Angeles-based artist Lindsey Warren are on view at George Billis Gallery.

Lindsey Warren was born and raised in Los Angeles, and her paintings, drawings and murals reflect much of the signature aesthetic of the popular American city. New works by the artist will be on view during a forthcoming exhibition titled Los Angeles Light at George Billis Gallery’s LA location beginning September 12.Highland Park Skyline, oil on canvas, 24 x 48"

“Lindsey Warren’s exquisite oil paintings are a love poem for Los Angeles,” says Tressa Williams, director of George Billis Gallery in LA. “She seeks out the hidden vistas and ignored byways, and through her unique mix of memory and reference photography, coaxes forth a painting that is simultaneously a representation of and the experience of place. Her vibrant color palette is informed by the dramatic and fleeting light so unique to Southern California. The paintings pay homage to the epic wonder that is Los Angeles, creating vibrant portraits of the unique and unexpectedly beautiful city.”

Featured in the exhibition is Ave 54 Gradient, an oil sporting a pink and purple color palette and silhouetted palm trees, imagery that immediately brings to mind beachy summer scenes in California. Highland Park Skyline is another silhouette scene, featuring palms and other foliage along with streetlights and glimpses of houses. Ave 54 Gradient, oil on canvas, 18 x 24"

“This recent series of urban landscape paintings is a celebration of the unique light of the city of Los Angeles. Within this group, urban and suburban areas are affectionately represented from a variety of vantage points,” says Warren. “The changing hues of the sky are framed by synthetic and natural elements, allowing the depicted structures, trees and clouds to generate individual portraits of neighborhoods within the sprawling city. I am drawn to dramatic and fleeting light that produces unique color experiences and each piece depicts a specific place, but one that anyone who calls Los Angeles home might find familiar.”

These works and others will be on view at George Billis Gallery through October 17. —
