On October 20, the Catalina Island Conservancy presents the 14th annual Wild Side Art Show and Sale. The fundraising event features 100 pieces by 10 of the country’s top plein air painters who visited the island in the spring to capture its remarkable vistas, secluded beaches and picturesque harbors.

This year’s featured artists are Suzie Baker, Brienne Brown, John Cosby, Don Demers, Kathleen Hudson, Jane Hunt, Kim Lordier, Terry Miura, Michael Obermeyer and Lori Putnam, each of whom bring their own unique interpretations of the Catalina Island landscape to life on the canvas.
Baker highlights her plein air chops in Artist’s View, a eucalyptus-framed scene overlooking Catalina’s Shark Harbor. “I painted this piece in plein air at Artists Alley for the 2023 Wild Side exhibition,” she says. “The experience was so inspiring that I decided to revisit the scene and create a larger studio version for the show this fall.”

One of the works inspired by Hunt’s stay on the island is White’s Landing Sunset. “Usually visitors come to White’s Landing via boat,” says Hunt. “But we were driven to this remote beach by generous rangers. I was drawn to these boats and created this studio painting based on my studies painted there.”
Obermeyer offers a different perspective with his nocturne Campfire at Parsons.“It is a view of perhaps the most remote and scenic campsite on the island,” he says. “The only access to this beach campsite is by foot and the location is on the calm, leeward side of the island so it is truly a quiet and peaceful destination.”
