A lifelong sculptor, Anthony Frudakis began sculpting while still a child, soaking up his knowledge of the arts from his father, noted sculptor EvAngelos Frudakis and his mother, Virginia, a painter. Frudakis finds inspiration in a multitude of places. “I’ve been inspired by great lives I’ve read about, by powerful, tragic moments in my life and our lives as a community, by acts of courage, kindness and love, and by beauty that I have seen and imagined,” he says. “As artists we want to be prepared through the development of our skills, sensibilities and souls to give honest and adequate expression to this gift we receive.”

Frudakis’ recent works, the subject of an exhibition at Michigan’s Hillsdale College from October 11 through November 20, have been informed by the current emphasis on our differences rather than the similarities that unify us. “Art can be a way of subtly, but persistently, reminding us that in the midst of the amazing diversity that life offers, there are also overarching principles—an invisible divine matrix that ties seeming disparate parts into a beautiful, unified whole. A unity.”
In terms of his art making, that means applying the principles of proportion, anatomy and compositional design, as well as themes that address the challenges of living and being, as he has done in works like In Exile and Restoration.

“We each are the embodiment of this mixture,” says Frudakis. “On the level of form, we appear unique, different and separate. But on the level of pure awareness, or spirit, we are one. Each work for me is an opportunity to point to this truth. To be sure that is a lot to ask of a piece of art, but why give our talents and quiet hours of work to easy victories when so much more can be shared.”
An opening reception will be held in Hillsdale College’s Daughtrey Gallery on October 11 at 5 p.m. You can see more of the artist’s work at www.anthonyfrudakis.com. —
