Nature and Life

Pushpa Sunder Mehta was the Grand Prize Winner in International Artist magazine’s Challenge No. 132, Landscapes.

Born in India in 1942, Pushpa Sunder Mehta paints soft, subdued landscapes of her home in Colorado, as well as locales in California, London and across the world. Recently, she’s also been diving into the art of moku hanga (Japanese woodblock printmaking).China Cove, Point Lobos, CA, watercolor, 22 x 29"

“My art is an expression of my heart and soul—a search for ‘truth’ and an admiration for nature and life. I want my art to be purposeful, free and inspiring,” says Mehta. “The will to continue with my art comes from the loving heavenly voice that tells me, ‘Keep up with your art.’ The driving force in my fingers to hold the brush and create original art is a gift of true love from my family. As I progress on the path of an artistic pilgrim, I seek to engage viewers into an artistic consciousness to love and respect Mother Earth.”Nature’s Pearls, watercolor, 11¾ x 8"Formerly an obstetrician and gynecologist, Mehta has loved art since she was a child and has taken formal art classes throughout her professional medical career. Since her retirement in 2003, she has consistently attended art classes, workshops, conferences and demonstrations conducted by master artists. Her work has been exhibited in numerous art events and exhibitions across the country, including the Evergreen Artists Association Juried Show, the CAG Member Art Show at Denver University Women’s College, the Equinox Exhibition at SYNC Gallery in Denver, Colorado, and many more.Nature’s Sublime Art, watercolor, 21 x 28"

Describing her watercolor Enchanting Twilight, she says, “One evening, as I was just finishing loading the groceries in my car, I looked to the west and there was this magnificent scene that caught my eyes. I took a few pictures with my iPhone. This scene of [an] approaching nocturne with cloudy skies over the Colorado Rocky Mountains with areas of light shining through—surely a sign of hope inspired me to paint the landscape.” Enchanting Twilight, watercolor, 14½ x 21"

Another watercolor, Nature’s Sublime Art, depicts lilies floating in a tranquil pond at Oxford Botanical Garden in England, with numerous other botanicals framing the scene. “Seeing these water lilies with the large magnificent lily pads is truly a joyous experience,” says Mehta. “These lily pads have diameters of 6 to 8 feet and are able to accommodate weights of 100 lbs.”Aspens, wood reduction watercolor print on mulberry paper, 10 x 10"Walking the trails of Point Lobos in California, Mehta was inspired by a seascape view at China Cove and took a photograph. Out of this photo emerged another painting, China Cove, Point Lobos, CA. She says, “The beauty of this seascape truly helps us to admire the eternal beauty of nature and life.”

Mehta has also been the recipient of a number of awards, including accolades from the Artists of Colorado Annual Exhibition in 2006 and 2011. —
