The One that Almost Got Away
Recently, Shain Gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina, let us know about a sale that happened in their gallery for a gorgeous still life painting titled Native Beauty by Mary Calengor.
As the gallery explains, “One of our clients could not get this piece out of her mind. She visited it time and time again, admiring the detail and drama of the woven basket. Though she loved it, she wasn’t certain her husband was going to admire it as much as she did. Luckily, someone must’ve tipped him off because he came in one day to purchase the piece as an anniversary gift.”
When the collector came back in to look at the painting again, “she was devastated to find out the piece had sold—not knowing that it was her husband who purchased it as a surprise. On their anniversary, she was told that the piece was in fact hers and it happily resides with the couple in a place they can admire it every day! We all have that story of the ‘piece that got away’; falling in love with a painting that sells before you can purchase it. However, this one has a happy twist, ending with a wonderful anniversary surprise.”
