A professional artist for more than 40 years, Peggy McGivern has always been surrounded by art. Her mother, grandmother and grandfather were all accomplished artists, and she was always encouraged to pursue her talents. On September 11, the Taos Art Museum at Fechin House in Taos, New Mexico, will honor her career with a retrospective titled When I was Six I was a Horse featuring nearly 70 paintings ranging from the 1970s through today. Many works will be available to purchase, and they also show her varied interests and explorations in subject matter and style.

McGivern had an interest in the abstract initially, followed by three-dimensional works in the 1980s and ’90s, then a transition to more traditional compositions and mixed media works before heading back toward abstraction. Among the pieces in the show is Black Birds Fly. “Much of my work is figurative, and I love exaggerating faces and body poses,” McGivern says. “Black Birds Fly was done in the ’90s when I first moved to Taos, and I was so intrigued with the relationship between humans and nature. It began a long running theme in a lot of my work.”

Of McGivern’s art, Taos Art Museum executive director Christy Schoedinger Coleman says, in a press release, “McGivern’s multilayered mixed media works inspire the viewer to hearken back to another time and place and imagine a whimsical story being told through her art.”
The retrospective will open with a reception on September 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. where McGivern will be signing her new pictorial memoir titled with the same name as the exhibition. —
