Here, There and Everywhere

EVOKE Contemporary presents its summer group exhibition beginning at the end of July.

Summer will be here before we know it, and ringing in the sweltering season is EVOKE Contemporary’s Summer Group Exhibition in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The show, which presents magnificent examples of artwork that portray and pay homage to the heartwarming aspects of nature, will include the works of Christopher Benson, Lynn Boggess, Christopher Burk, Ester Curini, Francis DiFronzo, Jeremy Mann, Louisa McElwain, Thomas Paquette, Kristine Poole and Michael Scott.Michael Scott, Old Growth, Forest, oil on canvas, 72 x 102"

An oil painting with thick brushstrokes of paint and impasto vibes, Summer 2019, by Boggess, reflects the vivid green of foliage on trees upon a rippling body of water.

While grounded in realism, Benson’s art has a distinct style. “I love looking at other painters’ work. I’m also hung up on oil paint itself, the surfaces and marks it makes,” says the artist. “Many painters are connoisseurs of their medium—we know its languages and history like a classical musician knows the great masterpieces of composition and performance.” Benson’s artwork in the exhibition include a seascape, The Falcon, with teal waters contrasted against the white crests of the waves, and The Basin, depicting a vast expanse of clouds over a basin, with a hint of sunlight peeking through.Christopher Benson, The Falcon, oil on linen, 54 x 54"

Lynn Boggess, Summer 2019, oil on canvas, 46 x 40"

Paquette is an adventurer, and his free spirit has taken him to dozens of gorgeous locales around North America and beyond. “The paintings I contributed to the exhibition...tell of the amazing places that inspired them. The largest painting is from the Isle of Skye in Scotland, where the weather is always in flux and fascinating,” he says. “Others were from my extensive travels to paint works from the length of the Mississippi River. Veritas Caput depicts its headwaters in Lake Itasca, while Wandering Waters is a twisting meander south of New Orleans, as seen from the small plane I hired. These works...were painted to capture something essential, and particular, about the enormous forces that shape the natural world. Through shifting, vibrant colors and swirling, or crusty, scraped, thick paint, the surfaces of my paintings echo natural forces almost more than they do a particular place.”Jeremy Mann, The White Oracle, oil on panel, 60 x 36"

Louisa McElwain, Jubilate, oil on canvas, 44 x 44"

Mann brings to the show dreamy figurative works that blend abstract and realist sentimentalities. His oils White Orchid and The White Oracle both feature the female form in white dresses that seem to billow out across the panel and take on lives of their own.

The exhibition opens July 31 and continues through August 22. There will also be a virtual tour available for those unable to make it to the gallery.
