Los Angeles-based Maxwell Alexander Gallery will host its eighth annual summer small works show July 11 to 25. With the recent shutdown due to COVID-19,
the gallery has adapted by offering collectors online-only exhibitions. For this show, art by Serge Marshennikov, Michael Klein, Teresa Elliott, Grant Perry and more will be available exclusively on the gallery website.

Among the highlights is Marshennikov’s Wonder, which shows off his signature use of light and shadow cast along a figure. In Free Ranging, Elliott also turns to a subject matter that she is recognized for—the longhorn. Collectors will also find Perry’s Winter’s Pomegranates, a meticulously painted still life showing several pomegranate fruits spilling their seeds as well as butterflies around them.
From Klein is Flora II, a work in his series Flora that remains in his hallmark genre, but with a new direction inspired by aesthetics and materials. The piece is an oil painted on two layers of plexiglass, which allows light to pass through in a way that is similar to traditional glazing.

“The focus on a single flower is a way of separating it from its source, and giving it a life of its own. Flora, to me, represents the spirit of the object itself,” says Klein. “In traditional art, the pigments are broken down using oil in a technical way that allows light to pass through the substance on a microscopic level. [It creates] an emission of light that is more vibrant than when the particles or photons are reflected or scattered off of an opaque surface. Plexiglass has allowed me to increase the physical space from microns to millimeters and therefore creating more of an airy quality to the painting itself. It is a subtle effect that makes for a vibrant viewing experience.”
