Looking at artist David Dunlop’s body of work, one will instantly notice his fascination with the outdoors—both urban and rural—as his pieces range from impactful cityscapes to quiet waterways and meadows. Delving into the artwork further, the viewer will soon recognize that even though disparate in imagery, the concept behind the paintings is the same: to capture the luminosity and movement of a place.

This motif will be on full view in his new exhibition, Luminous Adventures, at Susan Powell Fine Art in Madison, Connecticut, this summer. “The common theme is reflections, translucency and luminosity,” Dunlop says, adding that he captures this through the atmosphere and surfaces in the paintings. For instance, it’s found in light bouncing off wet city streets or the mirror-like surfaces of a river, and then he delves deeper by finding ways to make the viewer have a firsthand experience with the art.

“The conditions that we are looking for are magical conditions,” he explains. “So I ask: How do I try to elicit and emote an experience that we’d have in nature of the fullness of light permeating a place and the way we stand in a place or pass through it? The quality of motion becomes as important as atmosphere and luminosity.”

When viewing the cityscapes, for instance, one may feel as if they can walk right through the city, while his bucolic imagery could bring a quieter sensation—like running your hands through the grass or water—as one explores nature. Dunlop elaborates, “I’m hopeful that when people look at my work, they have another way of experiencing nature. They can feel the correlation between the nature and city, that they somehow have a quality of ambiguity where it’s alive and moving even though it’s just paint on the surface.”
Luminous Adventures is scheduled for exhibition June 5 through July 11. —
