Sharon painted plein air while on a trip to Carmel. The rocks at Gibson Beach in Point Lobos State Reserve catch the morning light as the orange of the ice plants turns to fire. "The sun on the edge of the cliffs and atmosphere of the morning light stopped me in my tracks. I set up and painted this in a rush before the light changed."

The sailboat, reflected in the surface of the water, created waves of alternating turquoise and navy blue. "This was a study in blues with so many different shades from the turquoise water to the cadet blue sail covers. The water is the star."

Sharon captures the sun as it clips the edge of the cliffs and creates a spectacular glow on the rocks. "I have recently been experimenting with back-lit scenes that are very dramatic. I am exploring light and how the sunlight indirectly effects the colors in the shadows. I almost didn't go with the group to paint in the late afternoon but decided at the last minute to take a chance and I was lucky to find myself at this perfect spot. This was one of those plein air experiences that I will never forget."

China Cove at Point Lobos cuts into the cliffs with its turquoise water. The kelp floats up from the ocean floor making a home for sea otters, fish and seals. "I painted this scene at my first plein air festival. Unless you have been there you may think the color of the water is exaggerated but I assure you it is just as turquoise as the painting. Amazingly beautiful."

Sharon continues to explore the combination of landscape with gold by interpreting the sunlit cliffs of Carmel using gold leaf. As the morning light streaked across China Cove it illuminated the cliffs and water with lovely highlights. "I wanted to experiment using the gold leaf with bold colors and this scene was perfect. The orange of the ice plants on the cliffs and the turquoise water would be so interesting against the gold leaf. Also, I saw that the contrasting shapes of light against shadow and I knew this combination would make a very unique painting."

"There is an inner beauty in nature that I have always tried to capture in my paintings. By incorporating gold leaf in my work I have revealed the glow which radiates from within."

The coast at Point Lobos has dramatic inlets, coves and bays that are carved into the rocky cliffs. Sharon has captured an intimate inlet that leads to the open sea. "The Carmel Art Festival was my first plein air event and even though I have participated in many more, I guess it's true, you never forget the first one. Because of that I have a special connection to the area."

Waves crash into the rocks at Laguna Beach where the cliffs come down to meet the turquoise ocean. Sharon captures an Iconic spot on the California coast in Laguna Beach at Heisler Park. "This is my office so I think you can see why I love painting plein air on location. As I painted I could smell of the ocean, hear the sound of the waves and feel the sun on my back."

Parker Lake in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, is a pristine spot with a dramatic view of the mountains. Using a plein air painting Sharon created this larger version. "The Sierras are a continuing source of inspiration. This painting explores the colors in the shadows and the majestic quality of an isolated lake. I am overawed."

The coast at Point Lobos, with its jagged rocks and and crashing waves, is highlighted against the misty mountains near Carmel. "The morning fog was just lifting as I painted this on location at Point Lobos State Park. I was set up on the sand and could feel the surf as it hit the rocks."

The snow on the mountains was deep, even in June, but each day it melts creating rushing streams. The hike to Sky Meadow in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains wound its way through snow drifts and wet bogs but the pay off was this amazing view. "I knew I had to paint my impression of Sky Meadow in the studio and using a tall canvas I was able to capture the vertical scale of the mountains."
