Soft but Distinct

For Janet Triplett’s upcoming solo show at Dare Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina, the artist’s focus is on coastal settings. Triplett lives and works on Bald Head Island in North Carolina, a subtropical island with palm trees, live oaks draped in Spanish moss, a maritime forest and the Atlantic Ocean.

Fog Lifting, oil on canvas, 30 x 40 in.

Such incredible scenery has an obvious influence on Triplett’s paintings, while she also strives to “paint skies that evoke a feeling of contentment, wonder, peace and tranquility,” she says, adding that “tranquility” is the theme and title of the show.

“As far as style or technique, I would say that my work is soft but distinct in that there is no question usually whether you are viewing a marsh, river or an open beach,” Triplett notes. “I use a variety of tools including brushes, tissues, occasionally a palette knife and my fingers. I hope to envelope the viewer in beauty.”

Summer Solitude, oil on canvas, 24 x 30 in.

Triplett shares that she walks the island in various places almost every morning.

For her show piece Fog Lifting, she says, “One morning it was quite foggy, and it began to lift as I was walking along the marsh. The sky was gorgeous and very colorful, and the water was a hazy mixture of air which turned the still water a blue shade of purple. It was magical! Of course, I took a photograph, but it didn’t do the scene justice, so I worked from memory. I often take a small handheld palette with me...and try to get the colors I see in the sky and any reflections down in paint, and then I take a photo. The paint guides me more in the studio, and I usually use artistic license in creating the painting.”

Splendor, oil on canvas, 36 x 36 in.

In Summer Solitude, we see Triplett shifting into a different color palette that is primarily blue for the skyscape and landscape view. “In [this piece], and a few other pieces in the show, I painted an almost abstract foreground so it wouldn’t compete with the sky,” she says. Additional works that pack a colorful punch include Evening Beauty, Breath and Splendor—all promoting a brilliant sky with minimal landscape in the foreground.

Tranquility, featuring around 20 paintings, opens at Dare Gallery with a reception on Friday, September 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. The show will hang through September 28. —
