Artist Chris Thomas has always been drawn to the natural world. Whether it’s light falling across a cluster of wild cherries, the structure of a honeycomb, or the patterns in leaves and flowers, he is continually amazed by the beauty, design and order that exists all around us.

“Those everyday discoveries are what inspire my work,” he says. “When I choose a subject, I’m looking for something that captures my attention and invites me to spend time observing it. The longer I study it, the more I appreciate its character and complexity. Through my paintings, I hope to share that experience with others and encourage them to notice the extraordinary beauty that often goes unseen in ordinary things.”

While Thomas’ work is rooted in realism, he occasionally incorporates subtle trompe l’oeil elements that “allow the painting to interact with its frame, gently blurring the line between illusion and reality,” he explains. “It’s another way of inviting viewers to slow down, look more closely and become engaged with the painting rather than simply passing by it.

“It is easy to move through life without noticing the beauty that’s right in front of us,” Thomas continues. “If my paintings help someone slow down and see it, then I feel I’ve accomplished something worthwhile.” —
