Wesley Wofford is a figurative sculptor whose primary focus is monumental works in the public sphere. His bronze, Harriet Tubman - The Beacon of Hope, received the American Fine Art Magazine Award of Excellence in the 18th International ARC Salon Competition. "My focus as an artist is to convey ideas through authenticity, exploring the overlaps of history, biographies and humanity to inspire and challenge my artistic practice,” says Wofford. “I want to transcend the individual portrait and create a relatable experience for the viewer that connects the past to the present, and projects forward into the future. I intend to create empathy bridges with an emotional resonance that elicits conversations and enriches our shared collective histories.”

Odyssey Wofford is Wofford’s studio director and organizes his nationwide exhibitions of monumental sculpture in public spaces, which include more than 30 cities with three different monuments to date. In January, the first statue of Solomon Northup was unveiled in front of the Avoyelles Parish Courthouse in Marksville, Louisiana, where he regained his freedom. Prior to this permanent installation, the monument traveled to five different cities to elevate the significance of Northup’s impact on the nation. Wofford’s Tubman monument The Journey to Freedom just completed a historic 750-mile walk with historian Tony Cohen following in the footsteps of the Underground Railroad from Maryland to Canada. Working closely with the Massachusett Tribe, Wofford has recently completed Generations, which portrays Sachem Chickataubut and his son Wampatuk, and will be unveiled later this year in Quincy, Massachusetts. —
