Artist Focus

Artist Focus: Sarah Becktel

Sarah Beckel’s paintings are inspired by the lives of wild animals that exist alongside us but beyond our attention. “I’m fascinated by how animals move through their environments and continue to adapt within a human-shaped world,” says the artist. “Some of the species I paint have adapted remarkably well to living near us, while others have disappeared from places they once called home. Yet even in heavily developed places, wild animals continue to inhabit the landscapes around us.”

The Night Calls I, oil on panel, 9 x 15 in.

Becktel spends a lot of time researching her subjects, but her work is equally driven by an emotional response to wildlife. “Most encounters with our wild neighbors are brief, fleeting moments—a fox crossing a road at dusk or a bear disappearing into the trees,” Becktel says. “These moments may only last an instant, but they can leave a profound impression.”

Becktel’s work has been exhibited at Robert Lange Studios in Charleston, South Carolina. Her paintings will also be showcased in Western Visions at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming, from September 5 through 27. —
