Artist Focus

Artist Focus: Kelley Mogilka

Artist Kelley Mogilka’s work is inspired by a muse she describes as “sensitive, timeless and yet fleeting moments of gesture in the female figure that evoke a contemplative or ethereal mood.” Mogilka explains, “As a figurative artist, I try to capture that muse through the models I work with. I feel that if painted in a certain way, the model can transcend a specific person and become something more universal and iconic: just pure expression.”

Her current series focuses on the four seasons and aims to capture the feelings and sensations associated with winter, spring, autumn and summer. “I really enjoy playing with different color palettes, paint applications and processes, and this series was a new kind of prompt for me to do that with each painting,” she says. “The seasons are all so different, but I enjoy them in each of their unique ways: winter being crisp yet comforting; spring a type of blooming emergence from that dark winter; then comes the full force of summer until autumn transitions us back inward again. It was a fun challenge to try to capture those transitory states through gesture and abstraction.”

Mogilka is exhibiting her work at the Festival of Arts of Laguna Beach Fine Art Show in Laguna Beach, California, from July 7 through September 3. Visit www.foapom.com for details. —
