Institutional Recognition

Letter from the Publishers

Welcome to the June issue of American Art Collector! This month we bring you two exceptional museum exhibitions that reflect the growing recognition of contemporary realism within major institutions. In June we are featuring a museum preview of Gary Erbe’s retrospective at the Reading Public Museum in Pennsylvania, and Monica Ikegwu’s exhibition Through the Veil at the Columbus Museum in Georgia.

Gary Erbe: Magical World celebrates the 50-plus-year career of one of America’s most respected realist painters. Known for his technically masterful compositions blending nostalgia, illusion and symbolism, Erbe’s work continues to resonate with collectors and museum audiences alike. Turn to Page 82 to see why.

Monica Ikegwu: Through the Veil presents a powerful body of figurative work exploring identity, emotion and perception through her distinctive contemporary portraiture. Her work continues to draw attention for its thoughtful realism and striking visual presence. Learn more about the Baltimore-based artist beginning on Page 86.

It is increasingly exciting to see museums embracing contemporary realism and artists through exhibitions and programming dedicated to living artists. This growing institutional support reflects a broader appreciation for craftsmanship, narrative and representational work at a time when we seek deeper connections in the art we acquire. This evolution is significant. As museums help shape artistic dialogue and preserve cultural legacy, their expanding commitment to realism reinforces the importance of the artists working within the genre today. It is an encouraging moment for artists, galleries and collectors alike as contemporary realism continues to gain visibility and momentum across the museum world.

Gallery previews and shows continue to light the path for new exceptional talent. June is one of the busiest months of the year for collectors. This issue features nearly 20 gallery previews and art shows, including society shows presented by the International Guild of Realism at Principal Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina; and the Oil Painters of America National Salon at the Steamboat Art Museum in Colorado, and several others.

We hope this issue offers both inspiration and insight as you continue your own collecting journey and discover the remarkable artists shaping realism today.
