Artist Focus

Artist Focus: Jonathan McPhillips

Jonathan McPhillips finds inspiration in nature through a lifetime spent along the New England coastline. “Drawn to scenes that might seem ordinary at first, I try to find a unique observation of viewpoint, color or contrast," says the artist. "The changing weather and light keeps things fresh and interesting every time I set up. Although I strive for a convincing sense of realism, I am less concerned with painting every detail and more interested in capturing the feeling of a place. I want the mood to come through, whether peaceful, reflective, or energized by weather and movement. Many of my decisions come down to simplifying shapes, focusing on light and letting the paint stay loose so the scene feels natural and immediate.”

McPhillips enjoys locations that carry a sense of familiarity. "People walk these fields, work in these harbors, and sail these shorelines," he says. "We all have our own memories tied to them. I like the idea that a painting can connect with someone in a personal way. My goal is to create something authentic and straightforward that relates to the viewer’s experiences, as well as my own.”

McPhillips’ passion for plein air painting has inspired him to paint landscapes and seascapes for over 25 years. He has received recognition for his work in plein air competitions nationwide, including the Cape Ann Best Seascape Award, and a second place award in the American Impressionist Society National Juried Exhibition. McPhillips will be featured in a group exhibition titled New England in Light at Susan Powell Fine Art in Madison, Connecticut, from July 10 through August 15, and another titled 8 Takes on Realism from August 21 through September 26. —
