San Juan Island, situated in the northern reaches of Washington’s Puget Sound, boasts breathtaking landscapes, driftwood-lined beaches, lush forests and no shortage of artistic inspiration.
Every June, artists on the island open their studio doors to let in the sea breeze and the public, offering a glimpse of their creative processes and art inspired by the island.

The 35th annual San Juan Island Artists’ Studio Tour takes place on June 6 and 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The event has grown to feature 26 studios and 68 participating island artists. The tour is free and self-guided, allowing visitors to explore the studios and hidden gems of the island at their own pace. A map is available on the San Juan Island Artists’ Studio Tour website.
Throughout the tour, visitors will see a range of unique and quirky studios, from small home studios to historic barns, coworking spaces, outdoor kilns and repurposed industrial spaces. Several of the host studios will feature guest artists, allowing visitors to engage with multiple island artists at one location. At each studio, visitors will be able to take in a wide variety of mediums, including sculpture, furniture, pottery, textiles, jewelry and more.

Local artist Alaina Scheffer says, “The tour is an excellent way to engage with the thriving artist community on the island, see the magic of creation directly in the artist’s studios, purchase their latest works, and enjoy a beautiful getaway by the sea. —
