Artist Focus

Artist Focus: Frank M. Costantino

In addition to working as an award-winning architectural illustrator for over five decades, Frank M. Costantino is also an accomplished watercolor painter of urban scenes, landscapes, homes, portraits and still life in plein air. He is continually inspired by the effortless, masterful works of watercolorists from many eras and cultures; particularly Sargent, Homer, Turner, Wyeth, Zorn, Reid, Prendergast, Hiroshi and fellow Winthrop, Massachusetts, native, John Whorf. Costantino enjoys the fluid challenge and unexpected possibilities of watercolor. Given the inherent transparency of his preferred medium, and infinite range of possible values and colors, he strives to express watercolor’s rich, luminous qualities in his pieces. He also enjoys working on figurative sketches in pencil, pen and ink, and other mediums.

The watercolor pieces featured here are examples of an ongoing departure from his prior plein air technique of using hot press paper as support for painting subjects on site. For Salinara’s Sink and Atkinson’s Lime Green Fountain, Costantino experimented with Yupo paper, a slick, synthetic substrate that allows for techniques and effects not viable with traditional watercolor paper.

Constantino will be featured in Newburyport Art Association’s plein air group show in April in Newburyport, Massachusetts; and in the Great Marblehead Paint-Out, Plein Air Event & Show from May 20 to 22, in Marblehead, Massachusetts. —
