Artist Focus

Artist Focus: John Dawson

John Dawson’s paintings, works on paper and intaglio etchings are about time and the human condition. “They are stories without words, old stories [and] new stories. They are tragedies, they are comedies, they are stories without words because there are no words to tell them,” the artist explains. “They are about time that runs out and yet never runs out.  Moving at the speed of light from an unsure place, in an undefined direction, for an indeterminate distance, to an unknown destination. The frozen moment, a place in the infinite, saved for a awhile beyond our own second, minute, hour, our own space. An endless road stretching from no particular beginning, to an undefined end.”

John Dawson, A Place Called Midnight, oil on canvas, 54 x 45 in.

For Dawson, his work is meant to inspire thinking and feeling, hearts and minds.

“However, in the end it’s really about the image,” he says. “If the images aren’t interesting and engaging, all the motivation behind it doesn’t matter. There lies the quest—to do works that are interesting and thoughtful. That is not only the challenge, but also the thrill of the doing of it.” —

John Dawson, American Anthology, intaglio etching, 24 x 18 in.
