Beyond the Frame

This February, the Marshall Gallery presents 2D goes 3D: Painters in the Round, an exhibition that showcases four artists who “build, layer and shape paint into dimensional artwork, redefining what a painting can become.”

Featured artists include Kathy Taylor, Josh Hernandez, Michael Lotenero and Mary Neville, all of whom create works that demonstrate how “traditional painting [can] break free of the frame,” through their own unique approach.

Josh Hernandez, Fractured Existence, oil on canvas, 72 x 60 in.

For Taylor, the theme of the show speaks directly to her technique. “My work is rooted in a process of building and excavating,” she says. “I add layers of paint and materials, then remove them to reveal what feels essential. I approach the surface much like a sculptor, using oil, acrylic, cold wax, collage elements and paper fragments to physically build dimension. These elements then become part of the structure, not just the imagery. By repeatedly shifting between two-dimensional marks and three-dimensional texture, I try to create surfaces that hold a tactile presence.”

Michael Lotenero, New Big King, oil on canvas, 96 x 72 in.

Works like Hallowed Horse embody much of Taylor’s layering process. “The repeated faces within this painting represent the collective nature of humanity, as something shared, and continually evolving," Taylor explains. "The symbol of a white horse carries a sense of reverence and a quiet spirituality while suggesting strength.”

Dimensionality is also an important factor for  Hernandez, who will be showing contemporary portraits that blend realism and abstraction. “Every piece begins with a blank canvas, and as layers are built, the reality of the artwork slowly reveals itself,” says Hernandez. “Whether working in charcoal or oil, the core focus of my work remains rooted in black and white. When color is introduced, it brings a unique sense of depth, allowing fragments of faces to emerge and express their story against the black and white foundation.”

Josh Hernandez, Saturated Violence, oil on canvas, 72 x 60 in.

For Hernandez there is little more compelling than the human face, which he articulates in the large format oils Saturated Violence and Fractured Existence. “[It] is the most recognizable yet most difficult aspect of a person to capture. Because of its ability to convey complex emotion through the subtlest gestures, the face becomes one of the most powerful subjects to depict,” he says. “I have an obsession with capturing the human condition by expressing what we think about, what we feel, and our spirituality as a whole.”

“At the Marshall Gallery, collectors have come to expect artwork that endures, pieces that not only elevate a space in the present but continue to offer lasting value and artistic significance for years to come," says the gallery’s director of sales, Jen Pugh. “For discerning collectors, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to enrich and expand their collections with pieces destined to resonate well into the future.”

Kathy Taylor, Hallowed Horse, oil, cold wax, mixed media on canvas, 24 x 24 in.

2D goes 3D: Painters in the Round opens with an artist reception of February 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. and hangs through the end of the month. —
