All Things Retro

Intersect Palm Springs Art + Design is a highlight for collectors during Modernism Week.

Palm Springs and its sleek architecture epitomize the mid-century modern aesthetic, and each year the city celebrates the city’s art and design heritage during Modernism Week, an 11-day festival featuring hundreds of tours, talks, parties, events, film screenings and art shows.

One of the highlights for art enthusiasts is Intersect Palm Springs Art + Design, which returns to the Palm Springs Convention Center from February 12 through 16, featuring international, national and regional galleries showcasing modern and contemporary works. Attendees can enjoy curated tours, thought-provoking talks and immersive events designed to inspire discovery, dialogue and engagement.

A centerpiece of this year’s show is a group exhibition curated by Sharrissa Iqbal, an American art specialist with a focus on abstraction. Radiant Space: Fields of Vision in Southern California, 1950-2025 will feature historic and contemporary works that merge technical precision with open-ended sensory experience.

The exhibit ties in with this year’s theme: “The Intersection of Art, Light & Technology,” with special programming curated to address the evolving role of creativity in a rapidly changing world, and explore new creative technologies and their cultural impact.

“Technology continues to evolve and grow in so many aspects of the art world,” says Tim von Gal, CEO of Intersect Art + Design. “Palm Springs is well-noted for such majestic, ever-changing light, which is at the inspirational core of so much work produced in the Coachella Valley. These two factors come together in some extraordinary work that will be presented in our curated exhibition, Radiant Space, and by numerous current-day masters of the medium who artistically bring light to life through technology.”

Other stand-out sessions include a presentation by architect and artist Leo Marmol, and a discussion with photographer Lawrence Schiller about his work with Marilyn Monroe and other legendary celebrities.

Contemporary realism will also have a presence at this year’s show. Los Angeles-based Billis/Williams Gallery will be bringing paintings that reflect the retro aesthetic associated with the Palm Springs area, such as Danny Heller’s oil Jaffe House Poolscape and Gina Minichino’s In And Out. Blue Rain Gallery, with locations in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Durango, Colorado, will be showing works by Doug West and a diverse group of other artists. Among the offerings of the Paris gallery Sobering Galerie is a new oil by Hogan Brown titled The Record Collector.

“Modern art, contemporary art and modernism design and architecture are true hallmarks of the greater Palm Springs region,” says von Gal. “It is what makes Palm Springs a true world class art destination. Modernism week is the most exciting and attended time in the Coachella Valley for art and design collectors and enthusiasts.  It is a natural opportunity for the art world to have these events side by side.”
