Tiny Treasures

Blue Rain Gallery showcases small works by its renowned artists

This holiday season, Blue Rain Gallery presents another opportunity to build up your small works collection or that of a loved one with its Annual Miniature Works Show. The event, which takes place at their Santa Fe location from November 28 through December 9, will showcase many gallery artists including Deladier Almeida, Karen Clarkson, Erin Currier, Tony De Luz, Hyrum Joe, Robin Jones, Chris Pappan, Paige Pierson, Mark Pugh, Kathryn Stedham, Helen K. Tindel, Dennis Ziemienski and others. Collectors can expect a diverse selection of contemporary realism, as well as Native American and Western art—all 12 by 12 inches or smaller.

Erin Currier, Agnes Pelton, acrylic and mixed media on panel, 10 x 8 in.

Among the offerings is a rare, small-scale still life by hyperrealist painter Lew Brennan. “Martini Time is an oil on canvas painting that makes up a part of my Name Your Poison series that I started years ago and is ongoing,” explains Brennan. “It all started with a charcoal and chalk drawing of a coffee plunger pot and coffee mug in charcoal and chalk. The challenge to capture the stainless steel plunger in the morning sunlight as well as the reflection of the mug was what interested me…The Name Your Poison series has something for everyone in that we all drink something, whether it’s tea, coffee or something stronger. I think the 12 by 12 format is very well received because of the size, which easily fits all homes, and the prices are generally lower, which makes them more affordable for more art lovers. That’s a good thing for sure.”

Erin Currier, whose mixed-media pieces incorporate post-consumer ephemera, will be presenting small homages to artists Agnes Pelton (1881-1961) and Betye Saar. “I feel a particular kinship to Agnes Pelton, a fellow nomad who travelled extensively and lived for long stretches abroad,” says Currier. “Like me, she was interested in and informed by mysticism, spirituality, and Eastern philosophy. We also share in common the inspiration we found in Taos, New Mexico, and the American Southwest in general, where our respective creative work transformed and evolved. I feel a connection to Betye Saar on several levels: like me, she uses assemblage, collage and mixed media, to reflect upon spirituality and the connectedness between different cultures.”

Mark Pugh, The Key to the Back Gate, oil on graphite on linen, 10 x 8 in.

Find these small gems and so many more at Blue Rain Gallery’s Annual Miniature Works Show, which opens with an artist reception on Friday, November 28 from 5 to 7 p.m.

“We’re proud to present our Annual Miniature Works Show, featuring many of Blue Rain Gallery’s renowned artists,” says marketing director Leah Garcia. “This exhibition is a wonderful opportunity for collectors to acquire new pieces or find meaningful gifts for loved ones…These small-scale works highlight the remarkable mastery and creativity of our artists in an accessible and intimate format.” —

Dennis Ziemienski, Billy’s Boots, oil on canvas board, 10 x 8 in.
