Something for Everyone

Giacobbe-Fritz Fine Art’s annual Small Works Show returns this December.

A holiday tradition in Santa Fe, Giacobbe-Fritz Fine Art’s annual Small Works Show features new works by 20 gallery artists—with all pieces measuring 20 inches or smaller. The show offers both serious collectors and casual art lovers the opportunity to acquire original artworks at more affordable price points.

Among the artists in the 2025 show are Rebecca Haines, Geoffrey Gorman, Melinda K. Hall, Justin Wheatley, David Tyndall, Wendeline Matson, Mary Alayne Thomas and more.

Geoffrey Gorman, On the Scent, bronze and found objects, 6 x 8 x 5 in.

Haines’ From the Same Cloth is a portrait of a deer and a raven. While the painting was created with oils, the artist makes it appear as though other materials like crayons and pencils were used. “Deer and raven are two of the wild creatures I most identify with. In fact, I often tell people that I’m a deer trying to be a human, and that’s why life can feel so hard. And also, if I could come back in another life as a different animal, it would be a raven,” says Haines. “When I create a painting, I just start making marks. I usually don’t have a pre-existing plan for where the piece will go. It’s an open-ended back and forth visual conversation between the image and myself… I believe that we humans are just another animal upon the earth, equal to the other wild beings. We are all cut from the same cloth, as it were.”

Mary Alayne Thomas, The Lark Summoned the Stars, watercolor and encaustic, 6 x 6 in.

Crafted from both clay and found objects, Gorman’s bronze sculpture On the Scent depicts a red fox in motion. “This is a small bronze piece that I hope captures the animal instincts of every wild animal," he says. “This red fox depends on its ability to identify every smell that it comes across. For [the fox], it is life and death. I believe animals are just like humans. Or I should say, maybe humans are just like animals, but we’ve kind of elevated ourselves and made ourselves feel more important. I’m using my animals as a metaphor of the human condition."

Justin Wheatley, Middletown, acrylic on panel, 12 x 6 in.

“The Small Works Show is one of my favorite exhibitions of the year," says gallery owner Deborah Fritz. “There’s something magical about how much expression and craftsmanship our artists can pack into such a small space. These pieces may be little, but they’re full of heart and they offer something for everyone.”

Rebecca Haines, From the Same Cloth, oil on panel, 18 x 18 in.

The show opens Friday, December 5, and hangs through the end of the year. —
