Carolyn Lindsey, a resident of Cuervo, New Mexico, creates paintings in oil, oil pastel and watercolor that capture the people and places in her area and on her travels. Lindsey feels that painting from life is paramount in the understanding and use of light and color.
Carolyn Lindsey, A Good Shepherd, oil, 20 x 20 in.Subject matter presents itself in the repetition and patterns of light and colors in her surroundings. Design becomes the driver of the painting, and the narrative follows. “As an artist, you hope the viewer has a connection to the painting,” says Lindsey. “The point at which you leave the subject matter and allow the painting to dictate its own ending is important in completing a successful original work of art.” Replicating what she sees is not the goal of her work, it is to create a design that draws the viewer into the painting, at which point they find more—more information and perhaps a connection. She feels creating art is a continual process of learning, with many avenues to success. Lindsey has been an art instructor at several different levels and supports the art community in her area.
