Waterhouse Gallery hosts a duo exhibition for Hsin-Yao Tseng and Derek Harrison.

Two artists currently flourishing in their careers come together for a duo exhibition at Waterhouse Gallery in Santa Barbara, California. Representational painter Derek Harrison creates figurative works, landscapes and cityscapes in soft and inviting color palettes. Hsin-Yao Tseng’s oils—depicting everything from nighttime city scenes to portraiture—feature expressive brushstrokes that pull viewers into the energy of each scene. Their talent belies their ages,” says Diane and Ralph Waterhouse, owners of Waterhouse Gallery. “We discovered Hsin-Yao in 2011 when he was attending the Academy of Art University…and spotted his talent immediately. He was the youngest artist at our gallery at that time. His work is expressive and transformative. He is skilled at portraiture, landscape, still life and urban scenes.”Derek Harrison, Evening Lights Santa Barbara, oil, 10 x 16"Tseng’s works in the forthcoming exhibition are primarily florals and figurative works set outdoors. “Lately, I’ve been inspired by Spanish artist Joaquín Sorolla and French painter Monet. I’ve always loved their use of color and capturing light and natural forms,” he says. “I’ve been focusing on depicting floral designs and patterns and outdoor figures, exploring different lighting and textures on my subjects.Derek Harrison, Quiet Moments, oil, 12 x 16"I visited this charming rose garden in South Bay, California, last summer, [and] I was fascinated by all the diverse displays of rose varieties. As the world has been affected…by Covid for two years now, I wanted to change my perspective and paint some beautiful, bright and vivid flowers to cheer people up and get some positive energy.”

Hsin-Yao Tseng, Twilight Roses, oil, 16 x 20"Harrison came to Waterhouse Gallery in 2014 as an upcoming artist honing his skills as a painter. “Derek is dedicated to the process of creating beautiful figurative and landscape paintings. They are romantic, classical and have a sense of elegance,” Ralph and Diane add.
