The Art Lover's Guide to Collecting Fine Art in Santa Fe & Vicinity

It comes as no surprise that so many are enraptured by the state of New Mexico. Some of the greatest artists of the 19th and 20th centuries lived and frequented the state for its geographical beauty, cultural diversity and historical richness. Many artist’s groups were formed out of New Mexico, including the Taos Art Colony, the Los Cinco Pintores and the Transcendental Painting Group, all revolutionizing art movements in their time. What these artists also achieved through their work, was opening the world’s heart and minds to the many splendors that New Mexico has to offer.Apache Mountain Spirit Dancer in front of the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture. Photo courtesy of Tourism Santa Fe.Today, the state, and more specifically the town of Santa Fe, is one of the leading art markets in the country. Places like Canyon Road—a half-mile strip filled to the brim with galleries, artist studios and shops—is one of the most popular destinations for art collectors. Visitors can find artwork ranging from historic to contemporary, in many varying subjects and mediums.Matthew Sievers, At the End of the Day, oil on panel, 36 x 36"

Every year, Canyon Road opens up even more for the Canyon Road Spring Art Festival, with this year’s May 9 event marking their ninth edition. Galleries open their doors to showcase an abundance of new work, while also offering demonstrations, tours and special events. Visitors can also engage with artists and can commission one-of-a-kind pieces.Jones Walker of Taos gallery. Photo courtesy of Visit Taos New Mexico.

Additional art districts in the Santa Fe area include the Plaza, located near a variety of art museums like the New Mexico Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Native Arts and the popular Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, which also offers tours of the artists Abiquiú home and studio—truly an architectural splendor. Other art districts are the Railyard, Baca Street and Siler Rufina Nexus, all bursting with galleries, creative projects and art spaces, including the popular Museum of Indian Arts & Culture.Taos landscape and Sky. The market brings together the most gifted Native American artists and millions of visitors and collectors, making for an experience you will not soon forget.Unidentified Ancestral Pueblo Artist, Socorro Black-on-white Jar, 1150-1280, organic pigment and fired clay. Photo by Blair Clark. To the north of Santa Fe is the town of Taos, yet another popular art destination. With its rich culture, including Pueblo and Spanish heritage, it’s the inspiration for many of the artist groups mentioned above, including the Taos Society of Artists, founded in 1915. One of the founding members, Joseph Henry Sharp, is known for his depictions of Native American subjects and helped to preserve a changing way of life. He was crucial in recording the history of the Taos region and New Mexico as a whole.Tony Abeyta (Navajo), Songs Emerging from Darkness, 2018, charcoal and ink wash on Hiromi paper mounted on canvas. Carol Peek

www.carolpeek.com

The d’Art Center in Norfolk, Virginia, is honored to present the work of Carol Peek this November in East Meets West, a two-person show in which Peek will represent the West. Her works will include images of landscapes, seascapes and horses from California, Wyoming and New Mexico. The artist is known for her prowess with color palettes and her observational skills in depicting beloved locations and their inherent atmospheric qualities. The moist air of the coastal landscapes infuse color in very different ways than the arid landscapes of the Southwest, where the glow of the evening sunset seems to paint the sky with impossibly over-saturated hues.Carol Peek, Red Roan Gypsy, watercolor, 6 x 6"

Carol Peek, Santa Fe Hues, oil on linen, 11 x 14"Peek’s intimate knowledge of horses, having owned and trained her own for decades, informs her paintings with truth and integrity; she knows the feel and smell of a horse’s neck, and the differences in the conformation of breeds as they have been her muse from the age of five. She selectively chooses her commissions from animal owners, keeping plenty of time open to paint the images that inspire her. Carol Peek, Sheltered, oil on linen, 8 x 18"

The artist has recently relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and has acquired a property on which she intends to host creative gatherings for visiting artists to work together or for individual artists to come for a creative retreat and residency. Peek is also represented by Holton Studio Gallery in Berkeley, California, and Thomas Reynolds Gallery in Santa Barbara, California.

As we are intimately acquainted with our artists, their work and their creative processes, we are able to pass this knowledge on to our visitors in exceptional detail.
