On the Water

Misure Nien was the Grand Prize Winner in International Artist magazine’s Challenge No. 127, Seascapes, Rivers & Lakes.

Misure Nien, who won International Artist’s recent Seascapes, Rivers & Lakes challenge, began his painting career back in 1980, heavily influenced by impressionist painters. While Nien has worked with oils since 1990, he primarily paints with water-based media, which has become his main focus and passion.Morning Light in Santorini, water-based media on canvas, 29 x 27"

Venice’s Coast, watercolor on paper, 22 x 30½"

While Nien lives his daily life on the gorgeous island of Formosa, Taiwan, he travels the world in constant search of new ideas and inspiration—from South Asia to Europe and beyond. He uses carefully observed and directly executed brushstrokes to paint a variety of subjects, including florals, still lifes and landscapes. When approaching a new painting, Nien says, “the simplest is the truth.” The images he paints sometimes reflect nature, music, people or a fascination with patterns of light, but often simply consist of an exciting design. “My goal is to continue to grow spiritually and technically so that I can interpret and illuminate what I see,” says the artist.Morning Light, gouache, 21½ x 30½"

Breakfast Time, gouache on paper, 21 x 15"

He describes his recent gouache, Breakfast Time, set in the restaurant of a business hotel in Japan. “For about a week, I would eat the breakfast included in the ryokan, and every day I would look at the breakfast area while eating. This is another kind of life I experienced for a short time, a visual experience. In this piece, I want to convey my mood, a mood of quietly enjoying breakfast, a mood of quietly feeling the freshness and beauty of life.” Morning Light in Santorini captures a quiet start to the day on the famed Greek island. He says, “At 5:30 in the morning, most of the people in Fira are still sleeping, and the morning light slowly kicks off a beautiful day. A light breeze, a white wall, thin clouds in the distance and a blue sea all around envelop the Greek sky.”Hardware Market, gouache on paper, 21 x 30"

Venice Holiday, watercolor on paper, 22 x 30½"For Nien, painting is about freedom and expression—conveying thoughts and feelings in a personal way. He aims to capture his many experiences in life with a sense of beauty and truth. —
