Leslie Pratt-Thomas captures the delicate beauty of winged creatures in her avian art. “Thinking of birds as frontline sentinels and messengers of climate change has only increased my appreciation of them,” says the artist. “For example, my first sighting of roseate spoonbills occurred several years ago off the coast of Georgia, and I quickly became enamored with these large pink birds with spoon-shaped bills. Until the last few years, it was unusual to see these creatures in South Carolina, but now, as their breeding grounds have expanded due to our warming planet, they are seen around our waterways on a regular basis.”Follow the Sun, oil on linen, 30 x 30"

Her upcoming solo show Wingspan, at Dare Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina, will include a variety of oil paintings depicting birds of the Lowcountry in their natural habitats. “In recent years, birds, and shorebirds in particular, have become a particular passion for me, especially as painting subject matter,” says Pratt-Thomas.

The gallery notes, “The intricacies of each bird, the way the light glows through their wings, the majesty of massive wingspans, the dare devil fly-overs and the sense of freedom that [Pratt-Thomas] captures, along with her glowing landscapes, have made her one of our most highly collected artists.”

The exhibition will be held November 5 through 26. —
