Waterhouse Gallery in Santa Barbara, California, celebrates 37 years with its Anniversary Show happening this November. The exhibition features works from several esteemed artists on the gallery’s roster, including gallery owner and artist Ralph Waterhouse, Jim McVicker, Jove Wang, Derek Harrison, Matt Smith and Rick Delanty, as well as guest artists: Jeremy Lipking, Molly Schmid, Pauline Roche, Mian Situ and Burton Silverman.
The celebration begins on Saturday, November 20, with demonstrations by Wang, Delanty, Harrison and Smith in Waterhouse Gallery’s courtyard from 1 to 4 p.m.
Ralph Waterhouse, Morning Mist, oil, 30 x 40"
One of the pieces in the show is Vaya con Dios, an oil by Harrison exploring a story between two figures, with a woman and a man who seem to be parting ways. The title means “Go with God,” the artist explains. “The scene is set on a Southern California hillside with tall eucalyptus trees in the distance, the coastal sage known as coyote brush in the foreground and the landscape is lit by the warm sun setting to the west,” he says. “There is a goodbye between the man and woman. This could be interpreted in a variety of ways...I always enjoy hearing what the viewer sees within these implied narrative pieces. I certainly have my own story behind the piece, but how you relate to it is what I intend and enjoy most.”
Jim McVicker, Carnival, oil, 16 x 20"
McVicker brings a jubilant and colorful scene in his oil Carnival, depicting the carnival at the Fortuna Rodeo. “I painted it on site this year back in July...Everyone was happy it was back in action in 2021. The carnival has always been part of the festivities throughout rodeo week...I found a great spot across the street where I could observe and paint without too many people even being aware I was present. The action, energy and movement of the people, plus the sounds and carnival color I find very compelling and exciting...It was painted in one go, as I knew that would be the only way I could convey what I was seeing and felt.” Thick, textured brushstrokes in vivid pigments create that atmosphere of excitement, bringing the sights and sounds to life.
Jove Wang, Santa Barbara Harbor, oil, 30 x 48"
“We have always strived to carry the finest contemporary paintings in the respective fields of landscape, figurative and urban paintings since 1984,” says Diane Waterhouse, who owns the gallery along with husband Ralph. “It has been an honor, a joy and a privilege.”
Derek Harrison, Vaya con Dios, oil, 30 x 48"
Guest artist Roche adds, “It’s always a great pleasure to be part of the Waterhouse Anniversary. Diane and Ralph are such wonderful people who care deeply about art and all their artists. With the show now in its 37th year, participating has the added joy of being part of the show’s long history. It is always a wonderful event!”
The Anniversary Show will be on view through December 19. —
