In Dreams About the West, Sarah Winkler’s first solo exhibition at Owen Contemporary in Santa Fe, New Mexico, she presents 16 mixed media works that are about “the desire to leave all that you know, your family and your homeland to make a long journey into an unknown landscape with a dream of a new start.” The show, running July 9 to 22, showcases the desert’s rich colors and organic textures through abstract painted layers, that when combined, have a realistic sense of place.
Winkler often incorporates crushed mineral and rock—such as marble dust, mica flake, pink granite and obsidian—into her paintings to deepen the connection to the land. Her work Ranch Meadows Sunrise Pink, “was born in an unexpected moment in the studio. A 2020 moment during the pandemic lockdown when
I needed to simply close my eyes, breathe deeply and drift a little. My mind wandered into a ranch meadow of prairie grasses, old cottonwoods, wildflowers and soft sunlight. Dreamy, relaxing and completely free. I was recalling a view of the rising Wasatch Range at sundown as you approach Park City, Utah, from the Eastern flank across the vast valley ranches and wild meadows. The sunrise breaking through the darkness to reveal, to transform, to begin again.”

This summer, Grenning Gallery will host a four-artist exhibition showcasing the artwork of Anthony Ackrill, Viktor Butko, Marc Dalessio and John Morfis. Each artist has their own approach to painting, as well as subject matter that is unique to their artistic visions. The show will include still lifes that tetter on the edge of Trompe l’Oeil by Morfis and Ackrill, while Dalessio and Butko are represented by landscapes that showcase the quiet and serenity of the place.
In the show is Butko’s Pink Moon, Provincetown, a beach scene with a boat in the famed art town. Describing the inspiration behind the work, Butko says, “That evening I was impressed by the rising of the moon over the ocean—it was a kind of theater on a planetary scale...And I was in the front row.” He adds, “Nature always prompts, and sometimes directly dictates to us, artists, which painting technique to use. I tried to convey the glow of the moon, sky and reflexes on the sand and water, and therefore chose the ‘rub-in’ method of painting. In this case, the grain of the canvas helps to achieve the effect of luminosity, which is exactly what I needed.”
The show will hang July 17 to August 1.

Tom Palmore has spent more than 35 years creating his signature animal paintings that show his adoration of the subjects and his eye for the details. The creatures are juxtaposed against backdrops that can be imaginative or surreal, or they are set up in whimsical scenes. Regardless, his paintings personify the animals and allow the viewer to think of their relationship with the creatures that inhabits our world.
In his upcoming solo show at LewAllen Galleries, on view July 23 through August 22, Palmore will showcase 19 new works, including Tiger Eyes. For this painting, Palmore was inspried by the background first after seeing a photo of an East Indian cariving with a peacock. “When I saw it, I thought ‘Wow, that would make a really wonderful background.’ Then I began to work with that, and thought about what went along with the Indian theme, and of course the white tiger,” says Palmore.
“I wanted the animal to be much ligher than the background, so it would be stronger graphically.” The title comes from the striking black eyes that the white tigers have.
