“I have always loved the detail work that goes into a realistic still life and the bright colors that can be achieved with oil paints,” says artist Rebecca Korth. Her still life paintings are crisp and clear, bright and jubilant—and brimming with energy. Sometimes, “still life” doesn’t feel like quite the right term, with hummingbirds fluttering around a bowl of peppers or making a literal splash into a martini.

“My main focus is to take objects of meaning or that I find beautiful and paint them in their best light. Telling a story through reflections, shadows and different textures,” she says. “My mother was ill for quite some time with a rare lung condition that kept her in bed for most of the day. My father filled their backyard with beautiful flowers and a long row of bird feeders right outside her window. I have many fond memories of sitting with her, chatting and watching the birds at play. After she passed away in January of 2009, I began painting still life almost exclusively and found myself adding a bird into every painting. It is my way of honoring her through my art and keeping her memory alive,” says Korth. The artist also pays tribute to her grandmother, who recently passed away, in her striking Chickadee & Strawberries, of a little chickadee perched atop one of the ruby red strawberries that is piled in a glass bowl.
