In May, Abend Gallery will open a series of solo exhibitions that will highlight the dynamic array of artwork the gallery has to offer. There will be figurative pieces, work with juxtapositions of historic and contemporary imagery and landscapes.
O’Neil Scott, Know Your Worth, oil on panel, 14 x 11"
May 1 through June 5 is a solo exhibition for artist Patrick Nevins titled Saccharine. For a while his artwork has involved combining candy with backgrounds that are either fabricated or of famous historical works of art. “For Catch of the Day it was a print by the famous ornithologist, naturalist and painter John James Audubon. The bird depicted, the Louisiana heron, appears to be hunting for its next meal. So I gave it a fish, a Swedish fish,” says Nevins. “The piece is not meant to be deep or philosophical, just a bit of whimsy and levity, which I think we could all use a little more of right now.”
Kevin A. Moore, Visualize, oil on panel, 12 x 12"
O’Neil Scott’s solo show Wide Awake happens May 5 through June 5 and will include his painting Know Your Worth, which “asks us to question our internal story,” he shares. “The thoughts we tell ourselves define who we are and create our world. Waking up to the idea that most of those thoughts are false or inaccurate, and having the courage to investigate the truths behind what we believe can dramatically alter our lives. Moving away from a mindset of suffering and moving toward empathy and gratitude will not only impact us but also the people around us.”
Patrick Nevins, Catch of the Day, oil on ACM panel, 7 x 7"
Reflections, a solo show for Kevin A. Moore, will open May 12 and will be on view until June 12. The exhibition, according to the artist, aims to bring attention to self-improvement. “Visualize was created to focus on the importance of mental representations and visualizations,” he says of the painting, which depicts a face partially revealed behind an opaque layer that hides the other features. “Utilizing these can help you become more efficient at learning new skills and can ultimately shift yourself and your perception of the world around you.”
David Shingler, Bear Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park, oil on wood, 18 x 24"
Rounding out the offerings is David Shingler’s Endless Colorado from May 19 through June 19. The show will focus on the “expansive beauty of the Colorado Rocky Mountains,” Shingler says. Explaining his decision for the places depicted, such as Bear Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park, he notes, “I hoped to capture the feeling that there’s so much to explore and never enough time to see it all. For my subjects, I chose iconic locations that many viewers will have a connection to. Even though these are more trekked on places, they will never lose their inspiration.” —
