The fifth annual AIS Impressions: Small Works Showcase, hosted by the American Impressionist Society, features a massive 154 juried works from artists across the country, as well as 21 additional works from AIS Masters, board members and founders. This year’s Judge of Awards, Roger Dale Brown, will review the works in person at the gallery, as well as conduct a workshop and a painting demonstration. “To capture the essence of a scene and make viewers feel they can step into a different day and understand its mood and beauty is my goal,” says Brown, who is passionate about observing and painting nature. Roger Dale Brown, Low Country Marsh, oil on linen, 9 x 12"

Among the artists juried into the 2021 show are Dan Beck, Paula Holtzclaw, Eric Jacobsen, Barbara Jaenicke, Julie Davis, Frank Eber, Rachel Dowd, Brandon Gonzales, Michele Usibelli, Kathie Odom and many others.

“My husband and I had taken the granddaughters for a visit to Cheekwood Gardens, and I took several photos. I was looking over the photos later and thought the location at the back of the mansion looked promising for a painting,” says Teresa Townsend Hargis of her plein air oil Urania in Boxwood Gardens at Cheekwood. “I drew out the design on my canvas in the studio, then headed to Cheekwood with my gear to paint. I set up over the next couple of days to capture the sun at the same time. I was especially happy to capture some of the late blooming wildflowers and, of course, the upper portion of Urania, the muse of astronomy.”Mary Qian, After, oil on canvas, 14 x 11"

Dan Beck, Purple, oil on board, 9 x 12"

Mary Qian explains how her figurative oil After came together—the result of a model changing positions after a posed set up during a wet-paint event. “I couldn’t change the pose [during the event], since it was time sensitive. The model did this pose after the session during break, and I liked it. So I painted her after the competition, and named it After,” she says.

AIS Impressions: Small Works Showcase is also set to have a Paint Out, Wet Wall event, painting demonstration, workshop and three receptions from March 30 to April 3. Registration is required for the workshop and is preferred for events. —
