Spring Flowers

Lotton Gallery’s newest exhibition celebrates the changing of the season.

As winter ends, the earth begins to rejuvenate and bring new life to the surface. One of the most beautiful moments is when colors spring forth from blossoming flowers. Throughout March, Lotton Gallery in Chicago will mark this seasonal change with the exhibition Spring Flowers focusing on the return of vegetation. Elaborating on that, gallery director Christina Franzoso says, “Our exhibition Spring Flowers is a celebration of new life and a new season, always remembering to stop to smell the flowers and allow dreams to blossom.”Gelena Pavlenko, A Sunshiny Day, oil on canvas, 18 x 22"

Gelena Pavlenko’s A Sunshiny Day is one of the standout pieces in the exhibition. “When I drew this painting, I was inspired by the rosebush that was next to my house in a village,” she says. “The smell of the roses was spreading through the street and of course I wanted to represent it on canvas.”Yana Movchan, Born to Fly, oil on canvas, 9 x 12"

Always inspired by life, Yana Movchan often chooses the objects and colors for her works based on what she is doing at that moment. For her painting Born to Fly, she was inspired in particular by the vibrancy of the flowers, which she found uplifting. “[There is a] little bird full of energy and power enjoying the surroundings,” she says of the piece. “I love how those moments can affect us.”Gerald M.P., You Make Me Happy, oil on canvas, 20 x 30"

Another artist who often paints moments that affect the viewer emotionally is Gerald M.P. Of his painting You Make Me Happy, he says, “I paint dewdrops on bright, colorful blooming flowers to give a happy feeling, and moments of happiness are cherished in life.”Julius Lira Salazar, Blossom, oil on canvas with gold and silver leaf, 30 x 30

Julius Lira Salazar’s work Blossom is a definitive sign of the changing seasons. He says, “After cold winter days, cherry blossoms signal a new spring season. I use silver leaf as the backdrop for the cherry blossom; it reflects the sunshine and changing of the colors in the flowers.”Jesus Navarro, May Flowers, oil on canvas, 20 x 20"

Having a similar inspiration is Jesus Navarro, whose painting May Flowers is on view in the exhibition. “I’m inspired by the newfound colors of spring, particularly the vibrant hues of the irises that bloom throughout many parts of my native Spain,” he says. “May Flowers is a tribute to the regrowth of the season and its visual splendor.” —
