Juan Cossio

The figurative pieces of Juan Cossio are an amalgam of artistic styles and mediums, allowing the viewer to find a synergy between seemingly different elements. In style, he paints realistic figures against abstracted backgrounds that range from brushstroke like images to intertwined lines and circles and squares.

“I don’t see any gap between realism and abstraction so I try to combine both worlds,” he explains. “You can see real shapes in abstract and vice versa. The point of view is very diverse and complicated, it’s just that we are used to seeing it one way, but if we could deepen our vision of the real world we could find incredible worlds further where the illusion of real disappears. It’s a matter of education and sensibility.”

In regards to medium, Cossio uses everything from paint to photographs to find the ideal composition for his art. He explains that growing up with vinyl records, he was fascinated with the front covers “where many techniques were combined to achieve amazing images, such as Roger Dean illustrations for Yes or Giger or [Emerson, Lake & Palmer]. So I use many materials in my paintings, and the airbrush as the main tool.”

He elaborates, “Airbrush allows me to take distance from the surface and from the traditional paintings with a brush, oil and canvas. My worked is based on photography, but at the end it goes further than photography or painting. I consider it ‘Hybrid Art.’”
Cossio’s latest works will be on view at R. Alexander Fine Art for the solo show New Realism: Life in Abstraction from November 26 through December 15.

Among his pieces in the show will be Zen Dream and Zen Dream II, which were inspired by the Zen world and Chinese calligraphy. “The figure is always in front of the abstract background in a sleepy mood like wanting to escape, or dream,” he says.

Then, his series On Nature, which includes the watercolor on paper On Nature 39, represents the beginning of his current artistic direction where he focuses more on the abstracted natural world.  Cossio explains, “In details such as sea rocks or the sand in the beach is where I find reminiscences of abstract paintings.”
