This plein air piece is a study for a larger painting. The richness of the warm and cool colors juxtaposed creates a color harmony through dissonance that is carried by inserting dark warm colors within the cool darks.
The most striking aspect of this scene is the immensity of the cottonwood tree. The composition is solid; the colors are rich with afternoon light; the foreground characters provide the sense of scale. This piece was done during 2 days of plein air work and one day of studio painting.
