Artist Focus

Artist Focus: Peter Swift

Peter Swift paints forgotten objects. “My goal is to find beauty in places where nobody has ever looked before,” he says. “I try not to leave our house.”

Peter Swift, Red Rebar, acrylic on canvas, 48 x 48 in.

To create the painting Red Rebar, Swift first cut off four small segments of rebar, the steel reinforcing rods commonly used in concrete construction. He painted the pieces a bright red (rebar is normally dark gray) and arranged them in a square. Then he used the standard black wireties to secure two of the corners of the square.

Peter Swift, Dignity of Work – Wrench, acrylic on canvas, 20 x 20 in.

“When you walk around in your basement, you are walking on bars of rebar embedded in the concrete floor,” Swift points out. His painting Dignity of Work – Wrench “honors the men and women who have used their hands, their tools, their savvy, experience and hard work to build our homes, our schools, our roads, and in fact everything we see around us,” he says. The artist’s biggest influences have been Louise Nevelson, Martin Puryear and Andy Goldsworthy. Following in the footsteps of these iconic artists, Swift’s goal is to use everyday objects to create laconic, resonant symmetries.  —
