A Homage to Artisans

Lana Privitera was the Second Prize Winner in International Artist magazine’s Challenge No. 154 Still Life.

Working with translucent watercolors, Lana Privitera paints stunning vintage tea sets and other antiques, creating paintings that are sharp, vivid and full of life.

Homage to Artisans, watercolor, 29 x 21 in.

Originally from Spain, Privitera graduated in 1983 from the Fine Arts School of Zaragoza, where she majored in Fashion Design and Art History. After working in advertising for a few years, she moved to the United States in the early 1990s. In recent years, her realistic watercolor still lifes have gathered a long list of top awards both in national and international art competitions, and she’s participated in invitationals in Greece, Italy, Spain, Russia, Canada, The Netherlands, China and more.

Her recent piece Homage to Artisansfeatures a warm golden palette, depicting a wooden basket and teaware made presumably from copper and bronze.

Tea for Two, watercolor, 29 x 21 in.

“Homage to Artisans is my tribute to all the artisans that create beautiful objects for everyday use. I painted this watercolor to entice the viewers to look around and take notice of the incredible beauty created by the traditional crafters in this world. So much talent to be found that doesn’t get due recognition,” says Privitera. “I intentionally chose a strong dominance of warm colors for this composition, to imply a sense of community among all the different objects and various trades represented in the painting.”

Tea Time Here, There, Everywhere, watercolor, 21 x 29 in.

In another painting are several floral teacups filled with amber liquid, surrounded by peonies in pale pink hues. “Tea for Two is a painting that was conceived to celebrate peaceful times, to remind us of how lucky we are when we can sit down to chat with loving friends or family,” she says. “As with most of my work, I took plenty of time to plan where to position each of my elements. The abundance of objects and shapes criss-crossing each other on the paper is symbolic, representing the fluidity of conversation and the variety of topics that those tea drinkers might exchange during the encounter.”

Bird Watching, watercolor, 29 x 21 in.

Privitera is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Philadelphia Watercolor Society and American Artists Professional League. She’s also been an art instructor for more than two decades and offers workshops and demonstrations online and in person.

Her work can be found in Gallery 71 in New York City, as well as in diverse upcoming group exhibitions on the East Coast, most notably in the Allied Artists of America’s 113th Annual Exhibition at the Reading Museum in Pennsylvania, on view through January 3, 2027. —
