Garden Beauties

Eileen Nistler was the Third Prize Winner in International Artist magazine’s Challenge No. 154 Still Life.

Colored pencil artist Eileen Nistler lives on the edge of the Black Hills of northeast Wyoming, where she finds daily inspiration. While she left for 17 years to pursue an education and a short career as an architect, “the magic of Wyoming called me back,” she says, ultimately returning to her childhood home. “[This is the] house where I colored my first paintings as a child. We own and operate the family ranch that lies between Upton and Sundance, Wyoming. I garden, I make pottery, I take many photos and I draw in my own little corner of the world.”

A Gift in Pink and White, colored pencil and ink, 12 x 15 in.

Nistler draws a variety of still lifes, including florals and botanicals, various foods, teacups and other items that reflect the beauty of things made by human hands.

This Moment depicts a vase of peonies surrounded by cloth with lace-like designs. “Most of the flowers in my art come from my garden,” Nistler explains. “The queen of my garden is the Sarah Bernhardt peony bush that was a gift from my mother. I cut the first flowers when they are just starting to open and let them open slowly in a cooler with a little ice. They tend to be more sculptural when they open slower.”

This Moment, colored pencil, 17 x 18 in.

Round and Round features two loaves of homemade sourdough bread wrapped in a white cloth. “There is something so wholesome and timeless about bread. My granddaughter made me this beautiful bread with her sourdough starter. They were beautiful and delicious,” says Nistler.

Round and Round, colored pencil, 10 x 16 in.

The artist is represented by Deselm’s Gallery, Wyoming Art and Frame and Expressions Gallery, all based in Wyoming. —
