Welcome to the October issue of American Art Collector! Contemporary realism collecting is on the rise as collectors like you are heavily reinvesting in representational art. We hear in the market that this draw toward exceptional technical skill, traditional drawing and painterly mastery is experiencing a significant resurgence across art markets, including auctions and galleries. Our magazine has always had one important purpose: to help collectors discover works of contemporary realism and make informed decisions about the art they want to bring into their homes and collections. It is an exciting time in the art world as collectors cherish the art of realism, and each month our features give you the story of the artist and their inspiration.

This month, we focus on both a genre and a destination. We are especially excited to introduce our new Plein Air Collector’s Focus, created in response to feedback from our collectors. Painting in plein air is an extraordinary challenge. Artists step outside the studio and work directly from nature, capturing changing light, atmosphere, color and a moment that may disappear within minutes. It takes tremendous skill to translate that experience into a finished work of art. Inside this issue, we spotlight some of today’s outstanding plein air artists and the remarkable works they create.

Our October destination is Charleston, South Carolina, a city that holds a special place in our hearts. Managing editor Sarah Gianelli and I have both attended art events there over the years, and Charleston’s art culture and energy are undeniable. You can feel it in the galleries, the architecture and on the streets. One could almost call Charleston the Santa Fe of the South—a cultural hub with a deeply preserved and distinctive artistic identity. If you haven’t collected art in Charleston, this may be the month to book a trip. Principle Gallery, Robert Lange Studios and Sandpiper Gallery are some of the major stops that make Charleston such an exciting collecting destination.

October signifies the changing season in art. As different collecting destinations come alive for their seasons, we will continue to keep you informed about where the art is and what is available. Inside are eight spectacular gallery previews. Two highlights include Altamira Fine Art debuting new works by Jivan Lee, and Sense of Place Gallery presenting Daniel Keys and Mark Baral. If you are in the mood to buy art, we have brought you many vibrant choices. Enjoy the issue!
