In Memoriam: Ed Copley

Ed Copley (1944-2026) was an award-winning traditional realist painter, an acclaimed restoration artist, author and lecturer who was renowned for his masterful techniques rooted in classical training and deep art historical knowledge.

Born in Arkansas and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Copley exhibited a passion for art at an early age. He attended the Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio as a young teen, and later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Famous Artists School in Westport, Connecticut. Upon graduating, Copley worked as a commercial illustrator before returning to his painting practice and entering the highly specialized field of art restoration and conservation.

His biographers Dr. Lew Deitch and Hillary Noles write, “Over more than 55 years, Copley has meticulously restored paintings on canvas, wood panel, and copper plates, developing a profound understanding of the materials, glazing methods, and techniques employed by the great European and American masters. This extensive restoration experience provided rare insight into traditional studio practices….Known for his devotion to historical accuracy and authenticity, Copley spends significant time researching historical locations, artifacts, architecture, clothing, and cultural references before beginning a painting. His commitment to realism, combined with extraordinary craftsmanship and narrative depth, has earned his work placement in permanent museum collections and distinguished private collections throughout the United States and internationally.”

Copely was also an active and award-winning member of numerous art organizations including the Art Renewal Center and International Guild of Realism (IGOR).
