Since its founding in 1928, the American Artists Professional League has celebrated excellence in American realism. This year, the league will hold its inaugural online exhibition—the AAPL Open.

Steve Scheuring, Philly Special, oil on canvas, 36 x 72 in.
The exhibition opens on July 31 and is open to both members and non-members alike for the first time. The show features a curated selection of artworks by artists from across the United States, highlighting established and emerging talent. All works can be viewed on the AAPL website, with many available for purchase through organization's Artwork Store.

Deborah Gersony, Red Door, Provence, oil on panel, 16 x 12 in.
“One reason we decided to start this show is we’re hoping to get an outreach for people who haven’t been able to be a part of an AAPL show. It can be kind of an economic thing these days, and people want to enter AAPL shows, but we host mainly in-house shows,” says Karen Israel, one of the show’s co-chairs. “We thought, by doing an online show, we can see a sample of people’s works that can’t afford to ship or don’t want to ship their paintings and really open up to include young artists and give them that opportunity.”
The digital exhibition will showcase works in a variety of mediums, including oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, graphics and sculpture.
“If chosen by a jury consisting of the board members and several guest artists, selected artists can expect to see their work in the company of other accomplished artists in an online exhibit with an additional online social media,” says Israel.

Nancy Jacey, Shades of Cool, colored pencil, 27 x 20 in.
More than $10,000 in prizes will be presented during the exhibition. Juried artists will also have the chance to win a variety of awards, including Best in Show, the American Art Collector Award of Excellence and the President’s Award of Excellence, to name a few.
The exhibition will be presented on the AAPL website and on ShowSubmit.com and will remain on view through September 30. —
