Frieze New York | 5/13-5/17 | New York, NY

Worldwide, World Class

The global art community gathers this month at Frieze New York

Since Frieze Art Fair held its inaugural show in London’s Regent Park in 2003, it has expanded to three other major cities in the U.S., allowing a global scope of collectors and artists to connect at events that, no matter where their location, are considered among the top contemporary art fairs all year.

If you missed Frieze Los Angeles in late February or EXPO Chicago in April, and don’t think you’ll be able to make it to Korea this September for Frieze Seoul or London in October, you have another chance to experience what the buzz is all about at Frieze New York, taking place this May 13 through 17 in Manhattan at The Shed cultural center in Chelsea’s Hudson Yards.

While Frieze has an international reach, each fair is individually curated to highlight the local and regional arts community in and around its host city. For Frieze New York, now in its 15th edition, that means bringing together 65 galleries operating across 26 countries, the area’s world-class galleries and artists, and special programming curated by local leaders in the arts to spotlight the city’s distinctive inventiveness.

“Focus” is a section of the fair dedicated to avant-garde solo exhibitions by presented by boundary-pushing galleries operating for 12 years or less that showcase experimental and risk-taking artistic practices. Curator Lumi Tan explains, “This year’s ‘Focus’ brings together another ambitious round of presentations from galleries based in Buenos Aires, Mexico City, São Paulo, London, Biarritz and New York…I’ve been incredibly excited by the section’s expansive range of media and cultural histories, with solo presentations that demonstrate how both historic and emerging artists have been and continue to be invested in world-building—imagining new structures and forms to engage with subjects as overwhelming as ecological devastation and urban spectacle, to as intimate as the relationship between mother and child.”

Frieze New York kicks off with an invitation-only VIP preview on May 13 and opens to the public at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 14. The fair runs through Sunday, May 17, with doors opening at 11 a.m. daily. Visit the show website for details.

“The fair is a snapshot of the most compelling artistic practices today in an international city that embraces rigor, complexity and ambition,” says Frieze director of Americas Christine Messineo. “Our close relationships with New York’s institutions—particularly around time-based media and performance—extend our impact beyond the fair architecture, from Chelsea and into the wider city.” —
