Award Winners

Inspiration Abound

Cathryne Trachok was the Third Prize Winner in International Artist magazine’s Challenge No. 150 Florals & Gardens.

Cathryne Trachok has been an artist for the past 35 years. After receiving her art degree from the University of Nevada, she worked in advertising illustration until she had children, then began illustrating children’s books. After the world of book publishing, Trachok made the switch to fine art, taking workshops from David Leffel, Sherrie McGraw and Peggi Kroll-Roberts.

The Welcome Home, oil on linen, 36 x 24 in.

The artist works with several different subjects, including florals and Western subjects. Her recent oil The Welcome Home was inspired by a friend who left sunflowers on her front porch. “Sunflowers were the first flowers I drew and painted. I am so in awe of their human qualities, following the sun, conversing with their neighbors, popping up where least expected,” says Trachok. “Every petal is unique, adding to the energy each flower exhibits. All in all, I am very influenced by what is around me, and luckily I am surrounded by flowers.”

Another recent piece, The Virtues of Patience, captures a cactus garden in the artist’s front yard, facing west and catching the sunset every evening. “The flowers are the stars of the show,” she says, “but the supporting cast with the sharp spines, the heavy leaves and the shadows they cast makes these plants perfect to paint.”

Trachok has been accepted into and won awards in a number of national juried competitions, including the Mountain Oyster Club, OPA National and Western Regional Shows, Women Artists of the West (WAOW) National Shows, WAOW Woolaroc Invitational, California Art Club (CAC) Gold Medal Exhibitions, American Women Artists (AWA) national exhibitions and more.

She is an artist member of CAC and OPA, and a signature member of AWA and WAOW.  She is represented by Floyd Fine Arts in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. —
