Best known for his seascapes, Leonard Mizerek paints coastal and harbor scenes from around the world. He also enjoys painting cityscapes, night scenes and cafés.

Leonard Mizerek, Nantucket Breeze, oil on linen, 30 x 36 in.
Mizerek just returned from a painting trip where he painted in five countries in Europe, including many popular locations on site, while people watched him capture the view. To achieve his impressionist style, Mizerek applies the paint directly to his canvas, working quickly to create his interpretation of the scene. Color and use of light play a large part in creating his work.

Leonard Mizerek, Windswept, oil on canvas, 40 x 60 in.
“I look for the drama in the light and strive to evoke an emotion or a special moment to bring to a painting that will engage the viewer,” he explains. “I enjoy looking for the hidden colors in natural light and the effects of atmosphere. Light alters the color of all objects and touches those nearby. It sets a mood and evokes emotion, which I strive to portray in my work…I like painting maritime subjects because I enjoy the way water reflects the floating objects, as well as the sky and the time of day. It mirrors shapes and intensifies light. I often paint outdoors to capture the light firsthand and bring out all its colors and luminosity. I have found that when I return to a familiar place…having detailed knowledge of my subject gives me the freedom to concentrate on my technique with painterly effects. In doing so, I have a looser method of painting and more expressive brushwork, which adds spontaneity to the painting.”
