Brienne Brown is a plein air and studio artist working in both watercolor and oil. “I love the slightly controlled, chaotic nature of watercolor in the field,” she says. “Each painting reminds me of where I was, of the experiences I had, the sounds, smells and the people I met. As I try to capture the essence of a scene, my paintings are always more about a moment in time than a particular location.”

Brown’s subjects vary but she is especially inspired by nostalgic places like historic homes, timeworn buildings, and grand, ancient trees rich with character. “Painting these subjects gives me a sense of purpose and reflection, allowing me to honor their stories as they fade with time,” she shares. “Through plein air and being present, I can find a deeper connection and greater understanding of the emotions I wish to convey.”

In her studio, Brown channels the energy and spontaneity of her plein air work into more intentional and refined oil paintings. “Using studies, sketches and reference photos, I weave together my personal experiences with the narratives of my subjects, preserving their memories on canvas.”
Brown will be part of a four-artist group show at the Steamboat Art Museum in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, in summer 2027. —
